Men’s Golf Concludes Fall Schedule with 14th Place Result at McDonough Cup

ORLANDO, Fla. – Joey Savoie managed to shoot a 3-under-69 as the Saint Leo men's golf team jumped two spots from their first day finish to card a final round 288 as the Lions placed 14th at the McDonough Cup.

The Lions finished with a three round total 882 (298-296-288) and were just a single stroke out of 11th place.  The final tournament of the fall season for Saint Leo was contested at the 7,152 year, par 72 Eagle Creek Golf Club and was hosted by Rollins College.

Despite finishing second on the team and 35th overall, Savoie carded a three round total 220 (77-74-69) and is the first Lion to card a sub-70 round at the halfway point of the season.

Leading the team, and finishing 19th overall was Trevor Joseph, who's three-round 72-71-74—217 had him finish with the Saint Leo team title for the second time this season.

Finishing third for the Green and Gold, and placing 42nd overall was Chaz Heinz with a 76-73-72—221 as he improved his standing 11 spots from the first day's result.  Teammate Austin Grey also made a marked improvement as his 54-hole total 224 (73-78-73) jumped his overall finish from day one 10 spots to 53rd place.

Casey Bannon (78-78-75—156) finished the team totals for Saint Leo while Ryan Gendron carded 74-74-72—220 playing as an individual in the tournament.   Gendron's 35th place result ranks highest amongst the four competing individuals.

No. 16 Armstrong claimed the team title with a 288-286-283—857 while fellow SSC school No. 4 Nova Southeastern's 284-289-288—861 and Peach Belt Conference opponent No. 22 Lander, with a three-round 286-290-285—861 saw them share silver medalist honors.  Lander's Robert Prior finished as the individual champion behind an impressive 36-hole 68-70-69—207.

Eight of the 16 teams in the tough field are nationally ranked in Division II.

With the McDonough Cup now in the books, the Lions turn their attention to their spring championship season as fall play has now concluded.  Saint Leo will hit the course again in Savannah, Ga. on February 24 as they open play in the Pirate Invitational hosted by Armstrong.
