#SSCGolf Central: Men's Golf Looks to Improve Heading into Second Round

SAINT LEO, Fla. –The men's golf team opened up play at the Sunshine State Conference Championship on Sunday at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country club, shooting a 317 in the first round. After the first of a three-day tournament, Saint Leo is in ninth place.

The team struggled as a whole overall, with the Lions' top three scorers all reporting the same score of 79. Austin Grey, Trevor Joseph, and Ryan Connors all shot 79's in the first round, leaving much room to improve in the coming days. Nick Brothers and Chaz Heinz both fired scores of 80 in the first round of the conference tournament.

Right now as a team the Lions trail eighth place Tampa by 14 strokes, but with their familiarity of the course, should be able to shave off some strokes from their first round scores.

Leading the tournament after the first 18 holes is Nova Southeastern—who fired a team score of 288. They are two strokes ahead of second place Barry and four strokes ahead of third place Lynn.

Saint Leo will get right back in action tomorrow morning for round No. 2 with their tee time coming at 8:15 a.m. The Lions, who started play at hole No. 1 today, will tee off from the No. 10 hole tomorrow morning in the first group.
