SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team stands in second-place after shooting a five-over 293 in the first round of the Saint Leo Invitational Sunday afternoon. Nick Brothers stands as the Lions’ top finisher as he fired an even-par 72 on the par-72, 7,087-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Saint Leo, Florida. The Lions ‘B’ team concluded the first day in sixth-place with a 18-over 306.
The Lions, who have won the Saint Leo Invitational each year since its inception in 2004-05, were received numerous outstanding performances with seven Lions’ shooting 75 or lower.
Outside of Brothers' even-par success, Mark Sabatino shot a one-over 73 in just his second collegiate event. Justin Foster played steady golf for the most of the afternoon as he shot a two-over 74, while Chaz Heinz took advantage of a back-nine 35 to also shoot 74. Codi Daudelin also carded a 36 on the backside to register a three-over 75.
The ‘B’ team also saw excellent scores. In fact, Ronnie Carlson carded the lowest score on the front-nine with a 34. He concluded the day one-over 73. Tom Lynn followed with a firm three-over 75, while Ricky Briggs and Michael Wozniak posted identical scores of seven-over 79. Terrence O'Reilly rounded-out the quintet with an 80.
Overall, Webber International holds an eight-shot advantage over the Lions heading into the second and final round on Monday. The Warriors also have the performer on the men’s side as Connor O’Dell fired a four-under 68. Johnson &Wales is third in the four school, six team event with a nine-over 297. Tampa, Southeastern, as well the Saint Leo and Tampa 'B' teams round out the order.
On the first round, Coach Ray Cisbani was quoted as saying, “I was very pleased with the play of our guys during the first day. We are very young, so it is exciting to see them get better, both individually and as a team, with every round. I expect our guys to come out with the same intensity on their home course again tomorrow.”
The Lions will return to the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club to conclude the two-round Invitational on Monday, October 17.
