TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team opened its 2010 fall schedule at the Spartan Invitational (Hosted by the University of Tampa), Monday afternoon from the par-71, 6,802-yard Rogers Park Golf Course in Tampa, Fla. During the first round of action, the Lions totaled a 296 (+14) and stand fourth out of six teams.

Despite the fourth place showing, Saint Leo stands just 13 shots off of the lead pace set by the host Tampa Spartans with a 285 (+1), while only two shots separate the Lions from Brevard Community College (296) and Webber International (297).

Individually, Saint Leo was led by sophomore Nick Brothers as he currently sits in fourth-place. Brothers had an outstanding afternoon, going one-under on the back nine to finish the round with a one-over 72. One shot back of his teammate is newcomer Mark Sabatino. The Stillwater, N.Y. native fired a team best two-under-34 on the back side to offset a three-over front-nine effort to finish the day with a two-over-73.

Ronnie Carlson was steady through all 18-holes, signing his card with a three-over-74 and finishing in a tie for 14th-place. He was followed by freshman Codi Daudelin as he registered an eight-over-79. Rick Briggs rounded-out the Lions’ five-man group, shooting an 85.

Only two Sunshine State Conference schools are competing in the non-championship season event, as well as Warner University and Ave Maria.

The Lions, who claimed the team title at last season’s Spartan Invite, will wrap-up the two-round affair Tuesday afternoon from the Rogers Park Golf Course.
