SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team earned 54 points and begins the fall season eight spots out of the top-25 in the latest version of the Golf World/Nike Golf Preseason Poll, it was announced earlier this week.
The Lions, who are coming off of the most successful team seasons in program history, are expected to continue making strides towards the top of a powerful Sunshine State Conference.
Saint Leo earned their first ever team NCAA South Region team appearance in 2009-10, while JP Albuquerque made history as only the second men’s golfer to even make it to the NCAA Championships.
Despite Saint Leo losing much of its veteran presence from 2009-10 including Cole Cisbani, Mark McGuire, and JP Albuquerque, the Lions re-loaded with many critical pieces to the potential winning puzzle, including freshman Mark Sabatino.
The Lions also return a tournament-tested bunch in Nick Brothers and Tom Lynn, as well as Rick Briggs, Ronnie Carlson, Josh Spalding, and Michael Wozniak.
Boasting both of last season's NCAA Division II golf champions, the Sunshine State Conference has once again asserted itself as the top golf league heading into the 2010-11 season. Twelve SSC teams appear in the preseason golf polls, with the top three teams in both the men's and women's polls carrying the conference banner.
In the Golf World/Nike Golf Men's Preseason Coaches' Poll, SSC teams claim four of the top five slots.
Other Sunshine State Conference foes ranked in the poll are defending national champions Florida Southern, as they carry the preseason No. 1 ranking. Barry follows at No. 2, while Nova Southeastern tips the scales at No. 3, and Lynn is No. 5. All four of those schools competed in the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.
Additionally, Rollins also received votes.
The Lions will open non-championship action on October 4 when they travel to Rogers Park Golf Course to compete in the Spartan Invitational.
