WILSON, N.C. –The butterflies of the squad’s first ever team appearance in an NCAA regional were quickly shed as the quintet posted a four-over 288 to conclude day one of the NCAA South/Southeast regional in fourth place. Leading the group was Mark McGuire, as he fired a two-under 69 at the par-71, 6, 739-yard Wilson Country Club. The team sits just six shots out of first place.

Currently, Lander University claims the overall lead, as they wrapped-up action with a two-under 282. Barry (one-under 283) and Nova Southeastern (one-over 285) stand second and third, respectively. Individually, Valdosta State’s Chesley Gunn is the overall leader posting a four-under 67 in the 108-person field. Also, five of the six Sunshine State Conference school’s claim a spot in the top nine positions in the 20-team field.

As for SLU, McGuire may have been the last individual to tee-off for the Lions, but he quickly jumped in front of most competitors carding a two-under 69. In front of friends and family, the senior sunk 16 pars and added two birdies en route to a fourth-place finish.

Nipping at his heels was teammate JP Albuquerque. Albuquerque, a fellow senior, tamed the course with four birdies as he finished play with an even-par 71 and in a tie for 11th-place.

Freshman Nick Brothers and junior Tom Lynn also contributed solid scores to the final total, as each fired three-over 74’s. Brothers played consistent golf for the majority of the afternoon compiling 15 pars over the course of 18-holes. Lynn was also steady with the putter, saving par on over 10 different occasions.

On the first day success head coach Ray Cisbani stated, “We achieved great things on day one and look forward to improving our position over the coming rounds. We believe in each other and know we can accomplish great things.”

The squad will hit the links early Tuesday morning for second round play. Nick Brothers will be the first to tee-off at 8:20 a.m. EST. Once again, the top-five school’s from each region will secure a spot in the finals.
