Ft. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team closed the 2010 Sunshine State Conference Tournament in sixth-place, firing a final round nine-over 293. The squad closed the tournament posting a team score of 24-over 876 (295-288-293—876) at the par-71, 6,680 Yard Grande Oaks Golf Course in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Nova Southeastern played host to the nine-team, 44-person field.

Florida Southern (289-273-273—835) totaled a third-round score of 273 to jump Barry (282-277-281—840) and lay claim to the conference crown. However, Buccaneer Carlos Velez was the wire-to-wire individual medalist, shooting a 10-under 203 (66-68-69—203). The score was one stroke better than Southern’s Jude Eustaquio and Lynn’s Patricio Salem.

As for the Lions, Nick Brothers steadied the ship, posting a third round 1-over 72. He finished his three rounds with a score of 3-over 216 (71-73-72—216) and in a tie for 18th-place.

Cole Cisbani and Tom Lynn concluded the tourney in a tie for 31st. Cisbani (75-69-78—222) slipped nine strokes from his second round score to finish the final round with a 7-over 78. Lynn (76-73-73—222) continued to demonstrate his steady play, matching his second round score of 73 to close the three-day event at 9-over.

Senior Mark McGuire (78-73-73—224) also fired his second consecutive 2-over 73 to finish in a tie for 33rd.  His three-day total of 224 tied teammate JP Albuquerque (73-76-75—224). Albuquerque put the finishing touches on the tournament, posting a third round, 4-over 75.

It’s the Lions second sixth-place finish in three years and a three-spot improvement from 2009’s showing.

The Lions will now wait for a possible post-season bid from the NCAA. As of April 17, SLU ranked ninth in the regional rankings. 13 teams will earn bids to the NCAA South Region Tournament, which are set to begin on May 4 in Wilson, N.C. at the Wilson Country Club.
