HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s golf team claimed its fourth team title of the 2009-10 year and second in their 2010 championship season Sunday afternoon. SLU (305-293—598) concluded the two-round tournament with a 30-over-par 598 at the par-71, 6, 598 Yard El Campeon Golf Course. The Mission Inn Spring Classic hosted by St. John’s University is the second consecutive tournament hosted by the Red Storm that Saint Leo has claimed victory at.
The Lions finished three strokes ahead of second-place finisher Florida Gulf Coast University (301-300—601) and five shots ahead of Stetson University (302-301—603). Sunshine State Conference foe, the University of Tampa (314-308—622), concluded play seventh with a 54-over-par 622. The Green & Gold finished ahead seven DI colleges and universities.
For the day, senior Mark McGuire concluded the tournament as the individual medalist, shooting a three-over-par 145. His second round 69 was tied for the best score in the tournament and was seven shot improvement from day one. JP Albuquerque added to the Lions’ success as tied for third place with a five-over-par 147. He improved three strokes from his first round 75, to shoot a second day 72.
Cole Cisbani cracked the top-10 with a 10-over-par 152. His consistent play led him to shoot a 76 on both days of the tournament. Tom Lynn also found success on the course as he posted a second round 76 en route to a 12-over-par 154 for the weekend.
Nick Brothers rounded-out the group of five with 15-over-par 157. The freshman made great strides on the second day as he improved five strokes from his first round 81.
As of the latest NCAA poll, the Lions rank 28th in the nation and are primed to crack the top-25 in the next release.
The Lions remarkable season will resume on April 5 when they travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to take part in the Buccaneer Invitational at the Normandy Shores Golf Course.
