Tampa, Fla. (October 9, 2007) - The Saint Leo men's golf team finished ninth at the University of Tampa's Spartan Invitational on Tuesday. The Lions shot 912 (308-301-303) in their first tournament of the fall season at the par-71, 6,802-yard layout at Rogers Park Golf Course in Tampa, Fla.
Saint Leo junior Matt Cornuet (Sebring, Fla.) finished a career-best third individually, as he had a 54-hole total of four-over-par 217 (72-71-74). Cornuet’s second round score of 71 was a personal best, as he finished the event six strokes behind individual medalist Scott Aydelotte of Lynn University. Aydelotte was the lone player in the field of 90 to shoot under par with a score of 211 (-2). Eckerd’s C.J. Denmark shot a 70 in the final round to finish second with a 216 (+3).
The event, which was won by Lynn (882), included a top three comprised of Sunshine State Conference schools. Florida Tech (893) and Eckerd (900) rounded out the top three. Rollins finished tied with Tampa (909) for sixth-place with the Lions three strokes back.
Saint Leo will return to play when the Lions host the 2007 Saint Leo Fall Invitational at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club on Monday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 23.
