Valdosta, Ga. (February 28, 2007) – The Saint Leo men’s golf team opened its 2007 spring season with a second-place finish at the Thomas University Winter Invitational played at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.  The Lions carded a team score of 592 (298-294) to follow their tournament win in the fall season finale with the second-place showing in the spring opener.  Johnson & Wales University won with a team total of 583 (296-287).


Leading the way for the Lions was senior Jacob Halligan (Sr., Taylor Mill, Ky.) who shot a 1-under-par 143 (68-75) to finish second overall.  Johnson & Wales University’s David Venegas took home individual medalist honors with a pair of 66’s and a 36-hole total of 12-under-par.

Saint Leo freshman Mark McGuire (Clifton, N.J.) was also tied for sixth in the event with a 2-over-par 146 and a pair of 73’s.  Brian Schmidt (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) was tied for 22nd, while Cole Cisbani (Fr., New Port Richey, Fla.) and Chris Marinaro (Jr., Pittsfield, Mass.) were tied for 32nd with 156’s.

The Lions return to the links this weekend in Melbourne, Fla. at the Panther Invitational.  The Duran Golf Club will serve as host for the event, and will be the same course played during the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Championships later this spring.
