Hollywood, Fla. (September 26, 2006) – The Saint Leo men's golf team opened its 2006-07 season with a record-breaking performance at the Johnson & Wales National Preview at the Diplomat Country Club in Hollywood, Fla. this week.
The Lions finished sixth with a program-best score of 894 (297-302-295). Saint Leo’s third round total of 295 was also a new program record for lowest 18-hole team score.
SLU senior Jacob Halligan (Sr., Taylor Mill, Ky.) led the Lions with a tie for fifth individually. Halligan carded rounds of 75-71-70 for a 54-hole total of 216. Fellow senior Brian Schmidt (Sarasota, Fla.) also posted a top-20 finish in a tie for 18th, as he shot a 226 (76-74-76).
Brevard Community College won the event by shooting a team total of 864 (290-290-284), while host Johnson & Wales was runner-up with an 880 (294-298-288). Northwood University’s Magnus Stjanesund won individual medalist honors with a 3-under-par total of 213 (68-74-71).
The Lions return to play this weekend at the 12th Annual Webber International University Grenelefe Invitational. Tournament play will begin on Sunday, October 1 with a shotgun start at noon and will conclude on Monday with an 18-hole final round.
