J.R. Blount brings a lifetime of playing and coaching experience into his position. He is entering his fourth season with the Lions and came to Saint Leo University after concluding a successful professional playing career and four years at NCAA Division I Loyola University in Chicago. He has followed his former coach to Saint Leo as he serves as the Lions’ associate head coach under men's basketball coach Lance Randall.
Blount is a talented recruiter, using his knowledge of basketball in the Midwest to help rebuild the Saint Leo men's basketball program upon the coaching staff's arrival in 2011. Blount was instrumental in recruiting and developing the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Marcus Ruh, the Sunshine State Conference 2013 Defensive Player of the Year Shaun Adams, and All-Conference players Trent Thomas and Jerrel Harris. During the 2013-2014 campaign, Harris was named to the NABC Division II All-District Team, was selected NCAA All-South Region Tournament Team and was a First Team All-Sunshine State Conference selection.
Blount had a prestigious career playing for the Ramblers of Loyola under Coach Randall, starting all four years. He earned two team Most Valuable Player awards and was named to the Preseason Horizon League Second Team twice. Blount was also named the Horizon League Player of the Week twice and set the Ramblers school record for most points scored in a single game with 42.
After concluding his collegiate playing career, the tandem then coached together on the hardwood at Wisconsin – Stevens Point where Randall served as the associate head coach and Blount was an assistant. Together, they managed to take the Pointers to the Division II National Championship.
After helping UWSP to the national title, the native of Milwaukee, Wisc. jumped back into the professional ranks, where he posted some noteworthy accomplishments playing basketball in Europe. Voted his team’s Most Valuable Player, Blount was named a British Basketball All Star and Third Team All-League during the 2010-11 season by Eurobasket.com. It was a year that Blount finished fourth in the British Basketball League in scoring and second in assists.
In college, Blount was the recipient of the Male Athlete of the Year Award twice at Loyola and finished his career ninth on the school’s all-time scoring list and finished 10th in career assists.
Before attending Loyola, Blount was a standout high school basketball player at Whitefish Bay Dominican. Blount was named to the all-conference first team three times and was named a First Team All-State selection twice. He led his team to four consecutive conference championships and won state championships in 2004 and 2005. In his high school career, Blount was named team MVP three times.
Blount graduated with a double major in Psychology and Sociology from Loyola. He earned his Master's Defree from UW-Stevens Point in Education.
He lives with his wife Ashley and the couple reside in Lakeland, Fla.
