SAINT LEO, Fla. – In the Lions' last regular season contest of the 2013-14 year, the Saint Leo men's basketball team defeated the visiting Nova Southeastern Sharks by an 81-68 score. The win improved the Lions' record to 22-7 on the year and signaled the final time that seniors Jerrel Harris, Chim Kadima, and Spenser Mitchell would play on their home court in the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
The tip fell in favor of the Saint Leo squad, and the Lions' never looked back, cruising to an early 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play. In the first half alone, the Lions shot 16-32 (50 percent) from the field and pulled down 20 rebounds. The squad walked into halftime with a 45-37 lead.
After halftime expired, the Lions again came out ready to score, shooting 46 percent from the field and 39 percent from behind the three-point arc. The second period featured 21 more rebounds for the squad, as they forced 5 Nova Southeastern turnovers and tallied eight assists.
After a thorough forty minutes in which the Lions never lost the lead, Saint Leo cruised home to their 22nd victory of the year, marking a new program record.
As a whole, the Lions shot 27-56 (48 percent) from the field in the contest, earning a 72 percent free throw average and sinking 12 of 32 three point shots. In addition, the Lions recorded 18 assists while picking up 2 steals.
Despite the Sharks leading the Sunshine State Conference in three point field goals made and three-point field goal percentage, the Lions held Nova Southeastern to just 38 percent from the arc.
Defensively, Saint Leo forced six Nova Southeastern turnovers and pulled down an outstanding 44 rebounds.
Individually, senior Jerrel Harris led the Lions in scoring in the effort, registering 22 points. Junior Ron Foxx followed his lead with 19 points, and junior Ryan Wilson notched a new career high in scoring with 15 points. Junior Cale Girten also shot in double-digits with 11 points.
Foxx also led all players with 13 rebounds on the night. The only player to record a double-double, Foxx's performance marked his seventh double-double effort this season.
The Lions currently await their conference seeding, as the Sunshine State Conference tournament will take place next week, March 5-9, at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Fla. Pairings will be posted on SaintLeoLions.com as soon as they are released.
