Lions Impress in 76-65 Win over Flagler

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team's unblemished start to the 2013 season continued on Tuesday evening as the Lions overpowered visiting Flagler College for a 76-65 victory in non-conference action from the Bowman Center.

Opening up as much as a 17 point lead over the visitors from St. Augustine, Fla., the Lions (6-0) maintained the fast-paced attack that has worked well for them so far this season.  The fast ball movement from Saint Leo forced the Saints (0-1) into a number of fouls, allowing the Lions to rack up 31 visits to the free throw line.  Saint Leo converted 23 free throws off of 24 Flagler fouls, a total from the charity stripe that made much of the difference on the scoreboard.

With both teams hitting 23 shots and Flagler knocking down nine 3-pointers compared to the Lions' seven, connecting on 13 more free throws than their opponents helped Saint Leo open up the advantage and keep the lead for the majority of the game.

Leading the way for Saint Leo was senior Jerrel Harris who bucketed 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds, one board shy of a double-double.  While he shot 5-of-10 from the field, his 13-of-15 performance from the free throw line helped give him the game's scoring title.

Harris was one of four Lions in double figures with Chim Kadima working in the paint for 17 points, Cale Girten dropping in 13 and Trey Griseck adding 13 points in the 11-point victory.

As a team, the Lions shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the field while connecting on 7-of-20 (35 percent) three pointers.  Saint Leo went 23-for-31 from the free throw line while Flagler only managed to go 10-for-21 (47.6 percent).

Opening its season with the loss, Flagler was led by Matt Conway's 16 points as just two Saints scored in double figures.

Coming into the Flagler game on short rest with just 48 hours from their previous contest, the Lions will look toward another quick transition into another home contest as Saint Leo will welcome Virginia Union into the Bowman Center on Friday night.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it marks the second-straight year these two teams have squared off, with Saint Leo claiming a 76-49 victory in Richmond, Va. last December.
