Harris’ 33 Points Help Lions Open Season with 89-74 Win over Florida National

MAYAGUEZ, P.R. – Playing in the 2013 Mayaguez Basketball Classic, the Saint Leo men's basketball team opened up its 2013-14 slate with an 89-74 victory over the Florida National Conquistadors on Friday afternoon at the Coliseo Rafael A. Mangual on the campus of U.P.R. Mayaguez.   The win opens the Lions' season with a mark of 1-0, while Florida National drops to 3-4 in their first season.

Jerrel Harris lit up the scoreboard, draining a dominating 33 points to lead the game.  The Milwaukee, Wisc. Native shot 11-for-20 from the field, including 6-of-11 from long range, and a near perfect 5-of-6 from the charity stripe on his career day for the Lions.

Also pulling in double-figure scoring efforts on the day were seniors Chim Kadima and Spenser Mitchell with 17 and 10, respectively, and sophomore Jaylon Bell with 12 points on the day.  Junior transfer Ron Foxx pulled in 13 rebounds to lead the team, including nine defensive boards to help the Lions to their opening game victory.  Trey Griseck led the team with three assists.

Florida National was led by Quantavis Hall, who posted 21 points.  Bruce Moorman registered 16 points, while Aldor Kola tallied 11.  Hall led the Conquistators off the glass, pulling in eight rebounds on the day.

Saint Leo pulled out to a quick lead and never looked back, entering into the locker room at the half with a score of 50-32.  The Lions continued to roll through the second stanza, but were out-shot by their opponent 42-39.  Despite Florida National's second half surge, the Lions were able to hold onto their lead to close out the day with a final score of 89-74.

The Lions shot 46 percent from the field, and drained 35 percent of their shots from long range.  Thanks to Harris, Saint Leo shot a whopping 54 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.  The Lions drained 23-of-40 shots from the charity stripe, for a total percentage of 57.5.  The Conquistadors committed 22 fouls to the Lions' 16, and both teams earned five steals apiece.  The Green and Gold registered 25 points off the bench, compared to FNU's 15.
