SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's basketball team (10-2, 3-0 SSC) defeated the Florida Southern College Moccasins (9-2, 2-1 SSC) in what turned out to be a grueling battle of strength, Wednesday night from the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The game, which consisted of fouls, free throws, and a packed gymnasium, proved to be one of the toughest matches of the Lions' season thus far.
The moment both teams stepped onto the court, the atmosphere in the Bowman center changed dramatically. After Saint Leo gained an 8-point lead following nearly five minutes of play, the Florida Southern Moccasins let loose an attack that would derail any game plans made by either team.
After 40 minutes, 45 fouls, and 60 free throws, the result of the night's contest came down to the final seconds, as the Lions took the lead and held on.
It was a contest that saw the Lions' eighth-ranked field goal defense hold the nation's ninth-best scoring team to 22 points below their season average as FSC shot just 31 percent from the field.
Senior Marcus Ruh was the first player for the Lions to reach the 10-point club as he totaled 18 points, followed closely by junior Jerrel Harris (17), and senior Trent Thomas, who eventually tallied an astonishing 28 points on the night.
On the defensive side of the court, senior Shaun Adams led the Lions with 12 rebounds, with junior Spencer Mitchell collecting seven.
Junior Dominic Lane led the effort for the Moccasins, collecting a double-double on the night with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Seth Evans and Cameron Vines also joined the 10-point club, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lions now prepare for the next five consecutive Sunshine State Conference contests, as they travel to Barry University on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
