SAINT LEO, Fla. – Thanks to Lynn University’s 86-70 win over Florida Tech on Saturday evening, the Saint Leo men’s basketball team backed into the final spot in the 2010 BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Championship.  The Lions, playing as the tournament’s No. 8 seed, will travel to No. 1 seed Florida Southern on Wednesday night and face the Mocs in a first-round matchup in Lakeland.

The Lions concluded the conference season in a three-way gridlock with Tampa and Florida Tech at 4-12. Tiebreaking procedures call for the three teams' combined records against each other to be compared. In that scenario, Tampa went 3-1 with a sweep against SLU and a split with Tech. Saint Leo was 2-2 with a sweep against Tech and two losses to UT. Tech was 1-3 with a split versus UT and a pair of losses to SLU. That meant Tampa took the No. 7 seed, and Saint Leo claimed the final slot, while Florida Tech was eliminated from the tournament field.

The tournament will begin with quarterfinal games on Wednesday, March 3. The semifinals and finals will be played Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7 on the campus of Nova Southeastern University.

By virtue of its 90-82 win over Nova Southeastern on Saturday, Florida Southern (24-3) will be the top seed in the tournament. The Moccasins concluded the regular season with the same 13-3 SSC record as Rollins (22-5). The teams split their season series, and FSC gained the tournament tiebreaker by sweeping its series against third-seeded Eckerd. The Tars split their series with the Tritons.

No. 2 Rollins will host No. 7 Tampa (11-15) in a quarterfinal tilt.

No. 3 Eckerd (18-8) compiled an 11-5 conference mark and will entertain No. 6 Nova Southeastern (13-14) on Wednesday. The Sharks tallied a 6-10 SSC record in regular-season action.

No. 4 Lynn (15-12) will serve as the other quarterfinal host. The Fighting Knights chalked a 9-7 conference slate and will square off with No. 5 Barry (17-10), which compiled an 8-8 SSC record.

Quarterfinal winners will advance to Saturday's semifinals, which will be contested at the Don Taft University Center on the campus of Nova Southeastern University. The winner of the Eckerd/Nova Southeastern game will take on the Rollins/Tampa winner at noon. The Florida Southern/Saint Leo winner will then tangle with the Lynn/Barry winner at 2:30 p.m.
