Saint Leo, Fla. (February 23, 2008) – The Saint Leo University men’s basketball team (13-12, 6-8 SSC) moved a game over .500 with a 54-40 victory over visiting Barry University (9-19, 1-13 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at the Bowman Center.
Jordan Prais (So., Lakeland, Fla.) recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 13 points along with a career and game-high 14 rebounds. Quentin Cullop (So., Winter Haven, Fla.) added 14 points in the win. Barry was led in defeat by Karega Tucker who scored a game-high 22 points.
A sluggish first half saw both teams fail to get into any rhythm. The Lions opened a 7-2 lead in the early going, but Barry fought back to tie the score at 10-10. The game was tied 15-15 with 4:09 left in the opening half before the Lions closed the half with three straight points to take an 18-15 half-time lead.
Saint Leo began the second half on a 7-0 run, establishing control of the contest. The Bucs battled to get back into the game, but the margin was never less than six for the final 16:00 of the game. The Lions built their lead to a game-high 14 points on several occasions, including the final margin.
Cullop scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the second half, as Saint Leo shot 42.9% (9-of-21) from the floor in the second stanza. The Lions were also solid at the free throw line after the half-time break, shooting 72.7% (16-of-22) from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes.
The Lions will return to the hardwood on Wednesday night in the final home game of the season. Eckerd College will visit the Bowman Center on Senior Night with opening tip scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
