Saint Leo, Fla. (February 9, 2008) – The Saint Leo University men’s basketball team came back from a 21-point deficit, but could not complete the rally before falling 69-63 to Lynn University (12-10, 5-6 SSC) on Saturday afternoon.
Lynn outscored the Lions 8-2 in the final 3:15 of the contest to snap a four-game losing streak overall and a three-game losing streak to Saint Leo.
The Lions were led by junior Kyle Rowland (North Port, Fla.) who scored 14 points, while Brandon Powell (So., Tampa, Fla.) added 10. Lynn got a game-high 21 points from Chris Hall, including 17 in the first half to come away with the win.
Saint Leo never led and only tied the game twice, as the Fighting Knights used a hot shooting first half to build their 21-point advantage. Lynn shot 50.0% (17-of-34) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including 7-of-13 (53.8%) from beyond the three-point arc. The Knights led 25-4 in the opening 8:08 of the contest, but Saint Leo made it an 11-point game at half-time.
The visitors pushed their lead back to 12 early in the second half, but the Lions went on an 18-6 run to tie the game with 3:15 left. Rowland followed a block on one end of the floor with an emphatic dunk to tie the game at 61. However, the Lions could only muster a pair of free throws from Powell, while Lynn scored eight of the final 10 points to get the road win.
Saint Leo will host the University of Tampa on Wednesday in another Sunshine State Conference game. Opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
