St. Petersburg, Fla. (January 23, 2008) – The Saint Leo University men’s basketball team (7-9, 1-5 SSC) fell 98-53 to Eckerd College (11-5, 4-2 SSC) in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Wednesday night.
Eckerd senior guard Damone Morris led the Tritons to the win, scoring a game-high 32 points on 14-of-16 shooting. All but one Eckerd player scored in the game, as Josh King added 17 points and Zaronn Cann scored 13. Brandon Powell (So., Tampa, Fla.) scored 15 points, and made four three-pointers in defeat for the Lions.
Eckerd led from the opening tip, scoring 18 of the first 21 points and never looking back. The lead grew to as many as 25 points in the first half, and the Tritons led 47-24 at the break. Morris was red hot in the opening half, scoring 26 of his 32 points on 12-of-13 shooting in the first 20 minutes.
The Tritons didn’t let up in the second half, opening the stanza on a 13-1 run. Eckerd’s largest lead was matched with the final margin of 45.
Saint Leo will head to Miami Shores, Fla. this weekend to face Barry University in another Sunshine State Conference game. Opening tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Health and Sports Center.
