January 2 (Palm Beach, Fla) - The Saint Leo Universtiy men’s basketball team defeated the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Wednesday evening in Palm Beach, Fla. by a final score of 79-48 to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Lions were led early in the game by sophomore Quentin Cullop (Winter Haven, Fla.) who hit three of four three point field goals and finished the first half leading the Lions with 13 points. Sophomore Jordan Prais (Lakeland, Fla.) also took control in the middle as he scored 12 points, hitting four of seven shots and going a perfect four of four from the charity stripe. Prais would finish with a double-double scoring 21 points and recording 12 rebounds. The two combined for 25 of the Lions 38 first half points.
The second half would be much of t he same as the Lions took control on the second half as they started on a 12-5 run. Junior transfer Dusty Driggs (Sharpsville, Ind.) would take charge for the Lions in the second half scoring 11 points, while going 3-5 from the three-point line. The Lions would outscore the sailfish 41- 27 in the second half to close out Palm Beach 79-48. The Lions outrebounded the Sailfish 45-34, including outrebounding the Palm Beach by ten on the offensive glass.
The Lions defense was also a major contributor as they held the Sailfish to just 31% shooting from the floor. The Lions forced 12 turnovers including eight steels. The sailfish could not find the mark all night as they also struggled from the three point line, shooting 20% and only hit 45% on their free throws going 5 for 11. The Lions’ offense was lights out as they shot 50% from both the field and the behind the arc.
The Lions open Sunshine State Conference action Saturday, January 5 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center at 4:00 p.m. against the Rollins College Tars.
