St. Petersburg, Fla. (January 29, 2007) – The Saint Leo men’s basketball team (10-9, 4-5 SSC) fell 66-52 to Eckerd College (16-4, 6-3 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference game Monday night.
Saint Leo was led by junior Jonathan Banks (Tampa, Fla.) who scored a season-high 15 points, while Kyle Rowland (So., North Port, Fla.) added 13 in defeat.
Eckerd had three players score in double figures, led by Andre King-Holland’s game-high 16 points. Matt Cenatus and Craig Hazel added 10 points apiece in the contest.
The Tritons led from the outset, as they scored the opening four points on back-to-back King-Holland jumpers setting the tone for the contest. The lead was pushed to as many as 15 in the opening frame, and Eckerd went into the locker room with a 28-16 lead.
After Cenatus hit a three to open the scoring in the second half, the Lions scored six straight points to pull within nine. Eckerd again pushed the lead to 13 before another 6-0 spurt brought the Lions within seven with 11:53 left. However, that was as close as Saint Leo would get with the Tritons leading by double figures the remainder of the game.
Saint Leo will host the University of Tampa on Wednesday in another SSC contest. Opening tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
