Saint Leo, Fla. (January 27, 2007) – Three Saint Leo players scored in double figures, as the Lions (10-8, 4-4 SSC) defeated the Lynn University Fighting Knights (13-6, 5-3 SSC) by a score of 64-62 on Saturday afternoon in a Sunshine State Conference game.  The win was the first-ever for the Lions over the Knights after coming into the contest with an 0-22 mark all-time.

For the second straight game, Saint Leo was led by sophomore forward Kyle Rowland (North Port, Fla.) who scored 23 points, and added four rebounds and four blocks.  Saint Leo also got 13 points and 12 points from Quentin Cullop (Fr., Winter Haven, Fla.) and Richard Blue (Sr., Miami, Fla.), respectively.  Cullop also dished out a game-high six assists in the win.

The Lions’ defense held SSC leading scorer Andrew Smith to 10 points.  Hans Schur led the Knights in defeat with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Rowland provided what proved to be the game-winning bucket with 45-seconds left in the game after Smith had given the Knights a 62-61 lead with 1:07 left.  Smith’s lay-up was then blocked with 11-seconds remaining by SLU freshman Saladeem Dewberry (Calypso, N.C.).  After Dewberry converted on one of two from the free throw line, a pair of misses by Lynn’s Luke Postorino and Ed Millard sealed the win for the Lions.

Overall there were 14 ties and 13 lead changes with neither team leading by more than eight points.  Saint Leo shot 45.3% (24-of-53) while Lynn shot 41.9% (26-of-62).

The Lions will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to face Eckerd College on Monday night in their next game.  Opening tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
