Miami Shores, Fla. (January 20, 2007) – The Saint Leo men’s basketball team (8-8, 2-4 SSC) fell 74-68 on the road at Barry University (13-3, 5-1 SSC) on Saturday afternoon in a Sunshine State Conference game.
Saint Leo was led by freshman guard Quentin Cullop (Winter Haven Fla.) who scored 13 points in the contest. Barry’s Phil Puccia led all scorers with 19 points, including five three-pointers.
Barry scored the first seven points of the game, and built its lead to nine in the opening four-minutes. Saint Leo’s first field goal came 5:29 into the game, but was the start of a 18-2 run, which gave the Lions a seven-point lead. SLU eventually led by six at the break.
The Bucs came back strong in the second half, as they erased the half-time deficit and eventually took the lead 51-50 with 9:42 remaining. After the lead changed hands four times in the next two minutes, Barry took the advantage for good with 7:16 left.
Barry shot 45.1% (23-of-51), while Saint Leo shot 48.9% (23-of-47) from the field. The Bucs outrebounded the Lions 32-29 and held a 12-9 edge on the offensive glass.
Saint Leo returns to the hardwood on Wednesday when the Lions will host Florida Southern College in another SSC doubleheader. Opening tip for the men's game will be at 7:30 p.m.
