Saint Leo, Fla. (December 9, 2006) – Despite a game-high 18-point effort from senior Richard Blue (Miami, Fla.), the Saint Leo men’s basketball team (3-5, 0-1 SSC) was edged 60-52 by Nova Southeastern University (4-2, 1-0 SSC) in both teams Sunshine State Conference opener on Saturday.

Blue was 7-of-12 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arch, but a trio of Sharks scored in double figures to lead the visitors to the victory.  NSU forward Diego Aguiar led the team with 16 points, while both Tim Coenraad and David Naylor scored 14 points.

After Saint Leo opened the scoring on a jumper by Eric Sharper (So., Orlando, Fla.), the Sharks scored the next 16 points to open up a 16-2 lead with 12:42 remaining in the first half.  Saint Leo then went on a huge run of its own, as the Lions scored 18 of the next 20 points to take a 20-18 lead with 4:53 left in the opening frame.

NSU eventually took a three-point lead into the half-time locker room.  The Sharks carried that momentum into the second half, as they scored 12 of the first 16 points to stretch their lead to 11 points.

Saint Leo again climbed back into the game and took a 50-48 advantage on a three-pointer by J.J. Turner (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) with 5:41 left in the contest.  However, Aguiar gave the Sharks the lead for good with a lay-up that broke a 50-50 deadlock, as NSU scored 10 of the final 12 points to secure the win..

The Lions will hit the hardwood again on Saturday, December 16 at Palm Beach Atlantic University.  Opening tip for is slated for noon and the game will be broadcast live on the Internet via the Saint Leo Athletics Audiocast Network.
