Pensacola, Fla. (December 2, 2006) – The Saint Leo University men’s basketball team (2-4) ended the 2006 Hatch Mott MacDonald Hoop Classic with a 75-63 loss to Henderson State University (5-4) on Saturday in Pensacola, Fla.
Five Henderson State players scored in double figures, while Saint Leo was led by Richard Blue’s (Sr., Miami, Fla.) 12 points. SLU freshman guard Quentin Cullop (Winter Haven, Fla.) added 10 points in defeat for the Lions.
The game was close from the start, as neither team led by more than six points during the opening half. Saint Leo held the early advantage and ran out to a six-point lead at 14-8 with 13:40 left in the first half. However, a 6-0 run gave the Reddies their largest lead at five points, which was the eventual margin at half-time.
Henderson State continued to apply the pressure in the second half, and used a 9-2 run early to open up a 12-point advantage. The Lions closed to within five with 4:28 left but would get no closer down the stretch, as the Reddies went on a 12-3 run to open their largest lead of the game at 14 points.
Saint Leo will return home for its next two contests, beginning on Wednesday against Warner Southern. Opening tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Bowman Center.
