Lions Knock off No. 9 Franklin Pierce, 5-1
SAINT LEO, Fla. – In the first game of a three-day, three-game series against No. 9 Franklin Pierce, the Saint Leo baseball team defeated the visiting Ravens by a 5-1 score. Sophomore Michael Dunnigan tossed an 8-inning, one-run game, to earn the win and improve to 4-1 on the season.
After a scoreless top of the first, the Lions scored in the bottom of the inning as senior Chris Newcomb jumpstarted the inning with a leadoff double to left centerfield. Three batters later, the senior Fran Whitten drove a single up the middle to score Newcomb. On the next play, sophomore Taylor Perez, who reached base on a hit-by-pitch, was sent home on a fielder's choice.
The Lions repeated their effort in the bottom of the second inning, when two Saint Leo hits and a Franklin Pierce error allowed two more runs for the home team.
Though the Ravens scored one in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, the Lions earned it back in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to another Franklin Pierce error.
The 5-1 lead for the Lions would eventually decide the game.
