Lions Top Florida Southern in Non-Conference Game, 8-4
LAKELAND, Fla. – For the fourth time in the last five chances the Saint Leo University baseball (2-2) team has beaten Florida Southern College (0-4)—this time an 8-4 win over the Moccasins in a non-conference matchup from Henley Field. Behind a strong pitching performance and timely hitting, the Lions took the lead in the first inning and never trailed during the game.
"There wasn't much we did wrong tonight," Sean O'Connor said postgame. "A lot of the stuff that we did this weekend that we made mistakes on, we solved those problems tonight. We really came out and played well from start to finish."
Brandon Terry, in his first start of the 2013 season, went 3 1/3 innings before he was relieved by Tyrone Miller in the fourth. Terry gave up just three hits and two runs, while striking out four in the outing. Miller was credited with the win after tossing 4 2/3 innings in relief—also giving up just three hits and two runs.
Chris Newcomb led the Lions' offense, tallying three hits on the day and scoring three runs as well. Ryan Brnovich contributed two hits on the evening including an RBI base hit in the ninth inning. In total, seven Lions batters contributed to the season-high 11 hit performance.
The Lions took the lead in the top of the first after a Bobby Twitty double off the wall put Newcomb in position to be brought home on Daniel Torres' RBI. Florida Southern evened the game at one in the bottom of the inning, but in the top of the third the Lions scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mocs rallied in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to 6-4, but the Lions got two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to keep the Mocs an arm's length away.
Matt Hewitt closed the game out in the bottom of the ninth—filling up the zone with strikes and getting three quick outs to seal the game.
The Lions get back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they welcome Columbus State to Thomas B. Southard Stadium for a three game series.
