Collins Picks up ABCA All-South Region Honor
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo Baseball left-fielder Brendan Collins has been named a member of the Second Team on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-South Region Team it was announced by ABCA officials on Tuesday.
In his debut season, Collins batted .373 with 20 RBI and 30 runs scored. He posted a .412 on-base percentage and tallied 11 doubles en route to a .472 slugging percentage. Collins went 10-for-13 in stolen base attempts. Defensively, he notched a solid .961 fielding percentage as he was also named the Sunshine State Conference's Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference.
Jumping out to a .500 batting average after his first series of the season, the Ft. Myers, Fla. native cooled a bit during the month of February, but had pumped his average back up to .400 by March 3. A 3-for-3 night against Florida Southern on March 9 had him holding a .419 average, the highest point in the latter half of the season.
His best outing of the year came in a 4-for-5 night in a big win over Valdosta State. The performance briefly bumped his average back over the .400 mark and saw him finish the season with three multiple hit games.
In 39 games, the freshman was only kept hitless in nine contests.
Collins joined 32 student-athletes named ABCA All-Region. Similar to the SSC voting, Lynn's Anthony Boza earned South Region Player of the Year honors. Tampa's Sean Bierman was named region Pitcher of the Year. Mike Kinnison, head coach of Regional Champion Delta State, was named the Coach of the Year.
ABCA voting for the all-region team was conducted among the league's baseball coaches.
