It’s Time for Another Baseball Blood Bowl
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team is aiming to set another record in donation of something other than money as they kick off the 4th Annual Blood Bowl on Tuesday evening. The first game of the best-of-5 series gets underway tonight at 5:00 p.m. at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
What has seemingly become a fall rite of passage for the Saint Leo baseball team since head coach Russ McNickle's arrival four years ago, the Blood Bowl divides the Lions into two equally matched teams who square off in a five-game 'World Series' to wrap up the fall season. The losing team in the matchup is required to roll up their sleeves and donate blood on November 28th.
Holding a 2-0-1 all-time record in the Blood Bowl, the Gold Team led by assistant coach Lee Parks and student assistant Chris Fenisey look to make it four undefeated times over the members of the black team. But assistant coaches, Keith Strickland and Sean VanGuilder will look to change the fortunes of the Black Team after last year's questionable tie.
Although it appears to be a punishment, the donation is well-received beyond just the baseball team as both the winning team and members of other Saint Leo squads, including coaches and department staff members stop by and donate.
This year, the BloodNet's Bloodmobile will open for donations on Monday, November 28th between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and will be parked along the north side of the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
All are invited to attend the games as well as helping in the donation of blood. This season, the goal for the drive is 40 pints of blood, higher than previous years.
The series presents an excellent opportunity for players and students alike to give back to others in a special, life-saving manner as we further our commitment to the Core Values of Community and Responsible Stewardship.
