SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's soccer players
Conor McElhinney and
Guillaume Campos were named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week respectively, for their roles in the Lions' 2-1 double overtime win over Embry-Riddle last weekend.
McElhinney, a senior goalkeeper from Jericho, N.Y., charted four saves over nearly 109 minutes for his first collegiate victory of the year in the win over the Eagles. He faced an Embry-Riddle squad that tallied 12 total shots on goal and had eight corner kick opportunities.
Campos, a sophomore defender from Montpellier, France, netted both Saint Leo goals in the come-from-behind win. He scored his first goal in the 86th minute with an unassisted strike to tie the game at 1-1. He then headed a ball past Embry-Riddle keeper Richard Dearle in the 109th minute for the win, off a free kick by the Lions'
Armin Bajric. The goals were the first of Campos' career.
The 2-1 victory over Embry-Riddle improved the Lions' record to 1-3-0, 1-0-0 in SSC play, and gave Head Coach
Tony Paris his first win at the helm of Saint Leo men's soccer.
Saint Leo returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when the Lions host Palm Beach Atlantic at University Soccer Field. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
