SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo sophomore Ronald Cheserek picked up his fourth Sunshine State Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week award of 2017 on Monday, bringing to eight the number of SSC weekly award his has won over two seasons of competition.
Cheserek earned the honor after his second place result at the University of South Florida Invitational 8K, held Friday at USF's The Claw golf course. He crossed the line in 25:50.3, running a 5:11.9 mile pace. Cheserek was 14 seconds behind race winner Nathan Kuck from the University of Miami in the non-team scored event.
"Ronald has been working very hard to improve himself over the past couple of weeks," said Kent Reiber, Saint Leo head cross country coach. "We went out at USF with the goal to simulate NCAAs for the first mile, and then settle into a good rhythm for the next four. He actually went a bit faster than expected coming through the first mile in 4:27, but it's a good start for what he wants to achieve this year."
The Lions begin their championship season this Saturday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla., to compete in the SSC Cross Country Championship. The men's 8K championship will start at 7:45 a.m., followed by the women's 6K championship at 8:45 a.m.
