Thanks to his prior experience with management of the athletic facilities at Saint Leo, head men’s basketball coach Mike Madagan adds Assistant Athletic Director for Operations to his title. He will oversee the University’s athletic facilities including their game-day setup, maintenance and scheduling. He will also direct the Lions’ developing summer camp operation as well the game management aspect of Saint Leo’s game day operations. These responsibilities are in addition to his duties on the sidelines for SLU Men’s Basketball, a spot he has held since 2001.
After 12 years of serving as an assistant coach at the Division I and Division II levels, Mike Madagan began his first season as a head coach in 2001-2002, returning home to Saint Leo University in the process. Madagan was assistant coach at Division II national power Florida Southern College and Division I University of South Florida prior to accepting the position at Saint Leo.
Madagan learned the game of basketball from the ground up. His desire to coach was fueled by four years as a student manager for the Northern Illinois University men's basketball team. Madagan graduated with a major in physical education in 1988. His coaching career began that fall at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pa.
The native of Newport News, Va., who graduated from D.C. Everest High School in 1983, joined the staff at Saint Leo in the fall of 1989 and served for three years as an assistant coach. He left here to become an assistant coach at Florida Southern College, also a member of the Sunshine State Conference. The Mocs won two regular season league titles, two tournament crowns and advanced to the Division II post-season tournament twice during his time there.
Prior to joining the Lions, Madagan served as assistant coach at Division I University of South Florida for five years. His duties there encompassed a wide range of responsibilities. His on-court coaching emphasized team defense and working with the front court players.
During the season he coordinated written and video scouting reports. In the off-season, Madagan was in charge of player skill development with individual workout programs. He also organized team travel, helped secure non-conference games, monitored player academics and handled the team's equipment, apparel and footwear needs. Madagan also assisted in various aspects of recruiting and ran the USF summer basketball programs.
Madagan earned his master's degree in physical education from South Florida in 1993.
Madagan is married to the former Georgianna Kimbrough. The couple has two children, Hannah and Sarah. In addition to raising two children of their own, the Madagans are involved with six other children from two different families and have been since 1989. The Madagans were featured in a Tampa Tribune article titled 'Every Day is Family Day' in the main sports section on Fathers Day in 2001 for their accomplishments.
