Women's Programs Place 4th in SSC Mayor's Cup Trophy

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Saint Leo University finished the 2013-14 year with their highest-ever finish in the Sunshine State Conference Mayor's Cup all-sports trophy. The Lions placed fourth, while the University of Tampa took home first place.

First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award was traditionally sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.

In the women’s division, points are awarded based on final regular-season conference standings in basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. For cross country, golf, rowing and swimming points are award based on a team’s finish at their respective conference championship event.

Both Volleyball and Women's Tennis finished conference play in third place during their respective seasons, as both teams advanced to regional play. The success of the women's tennis program propelled them to an NCAA Final Four appearance, which stands as the first ever in Saint Leo history.

Women's Basketball, Women's Soccer, and Softball all wrapped up the year with fourth-place conference finishes. Women's Basketball, however, was the only sport of the three to advance to post-season play, competing in their first ever NCAA Division II South Region contest.

Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf, and Women's Swimming all finished the year with strong showings in their respective Sunshine State Conference competitions, and all sent individuals to the NCAA Division II National Championships. Swimmer Nicole Webe finished the National Championship 200-yd. Breatstroke race in fifth place, marking the highest finish ever for a Saint Leo individual. Golfer Marie Coors also finished the National Tournament tied for eighth.
