Softball Notes

  • No. 17 Saintn Leo travels to back Clearwater for a tough weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Classic Feb. 10-12. The Lions will play five schools on the weekend – Central Missouri [Feb. 10 // 5 p.m.], Georgia College [Feb. 10 // 7:30 p.m.], Texas A&M-Commerce [Feb. 11 // 3 p.m.], Tiffin [Feb. 11 // 5:30 p.m.], and No. 12 Saint Mary’s (Texas) [Feb. 12 // 11:30 p.m.].
  • The Lions enter at 5-1 on the year after a 3-1 weekend at the Eckerd Tournament on Feb. 4-5. Saint Leo took down Chadron State, 8-0 in five innings, to open the weekend up before a 6-3 win over SSC foe Florida Southern. The Lions dropped their first game of the year, 2-1, to Chadron State before bouncing back with a 10-0 win over SSC foe Eckerd in six innings.
  • On the year, the Lions are led by Brittany Creamer who is batting .615 from the plate with eight hits in 13 at-bats. Creamer has two doubles on the young season and two RBI. Both Danielle Bottley and Michelle George are batting .500 on the year as Bottley has going 2-for-4 from the plate and George 1-for-2.
  • As a team, the Lions are batting .374 from the plate collectively as the pitching core are holding opponents to just .174 from the dish. The pitching staff owns a 1.08 ERA in 39 innings of action led by Sara Neuman and Samantha Tyler. Neuman is 1-0 on the year with one save in nine innings of work allowing no runs and just three hits with a 0.00 ERA, where Tyler stands with a 0.00 ERA after three innings of work with no hits, no runs, and just one walk. The two workhorses – Stephanie Adkins and Alison Mitts – are 3-1 on the year combined as Adkins is 2-0 with 14 innings of work. Adkins had allowed nine hits, four runs and has recorded 12 strikeouts. Mitts owns a 1-1 record in 13 innings allowing 11 hits but just three runs, two earned while striking out nine batters.
  • Saint Leo’s opponents enter the weekend tournament with a combined record of 15-6. No. 12 Saint Mary’s (Texas) enters with a 5-1 record, as TAMU-Commerce is 4-1. The Lions’ Friday competition enters at 3-3 (Central Missouri) and 3-1 (Georgia College). Tiffin is looking to kick off their season this weekend.
Baseball Notes
  • Saint Leo baseball hosts Lee University this weekend. The Lions enter at 2-1 on the year after taking two of three against West Alabama last weekend to open up the season. The Flames come into the contest at 3-1 on the year after their most recent game, Feb. 9 vs. Albany State (15-0).
  • The Lions combined for 26 runs in three games after taking game one against West Alabama 11-5. Saint Leo fell to West Alabama 8-6 in the second game before bouncing back for a 9-8 win in 10 innings.
  • Derek Gibree leads the team from the plate as he owns a .545 batting average after going 6-for-11 from the plate in the Lions opening weekend three-game series.
  • Eleven Lions have made an appearance on the mound this season with Oscar Gordillo and catcher Michael Mann both at 1-0 on the year. Mann pitched 1.1 innings and picked up the 9-8 win in 10 innings on Feb. 5. Gordillo saw the most action in his appearance with seven innings of work giving up 10 hits, four runs and struck out two batters as he owns a 5.14 ERA. 

Men's Lacrosse Notes

  • The Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team takes on first-year program Chowan on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at University Turf Stadium.

  • Saint Leo is coming off a 14-11 upset victory over #7 LIU Post. Saint Leo saw Kyle Pauwels tally four goals, while Charlie Kurtenbach added three goals and an assist. Both Jake Gilmour and Matt Shand added three assists and a goal. In his first career start, sophomore Thomas Tatarian tallied 14 saves and only gave up two second-half goals to help the Lions to the comeback win.

  • Jake Gilmour is just seven assists shy of tying the school record for assists in a career.

  • Both Pauwels and Tatarian were honored by the Sunshine State Conference for their play against LIU Post, earning Offensive and Defensive player of the week, respectively.

  • As a team, the Lions shot 74.1-percent on goal and 51.9-shot percentage. They grabbed 23 groundballs and caused 11 turnovers.

Women's Basketball Notes
  • The Saint Leo women’s basketball team takes on Florida Tech on Saturday evening as the Lions search for their third-straight win at 5:30 p.m. in the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
  • Saint Leo is coming off a big 66-61 win over Lynn University where sophomore Asia Royster dropped a career-high 28 points with nine rebounds. The Lions used a blistering fourth quarter to keep Lynn at bay as they shot 64.3-percent from the field.
  • Over the last three games, Royster is averaging 18.7 points per game, a huge increase from 7.1 average on the season. She is also shooting 53.2-percent from the field.
  • Chelsy Springs leads the Lions with 15.5 points per game, while Ragen Dotson adds 11.5 points per game.
  • As a team, the Lions are averaging 66.2 points per game on 39.0-percent shooting. They add 12.6 assists per game while tagging on 8.7 steals per game.
  • Saint Leo is now 7-14, 2-11 SSC.
  • Florida Tech enters Saturday’s game with a 10-11 record with a 5-9 SSC record. The Panthers are averaging 64.0 points per game on 39.0-percent shooting. They are tallying 10.6 steals per game.
  • Shequana Harris averages 12.9 points per game while DeLise Williams adds on 11.0 points.
  • In the last outing between these two squads, FIT barely ousted the Lions, 71-69. Nikira Hooks tallied 24 points off the bench, while Chelsy Springs added 21 and eight rebounds. Saint Leo hit nine three-point shots on 52.9-percent shooting; the Panthers only hit one. The difference came on the rebounding side of things as the Panthers grabbed 45, while Saint Leo only grabbed 27. 

Men's Basketball Notes

  • Saint Leo welcomes in Florida Tech on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. start. The Lions (11-12, 5-8 SSC) will look to sweep the Panthers (12-11, 5-9 SSC) in the season series after a 90-79 OT win in Melbourne. Saint Leo enters after a 75-73 OT loss to Lynn on Feb. 8.
  • In the loss to Lynn, the Lions were led by Justin Satchell who recorded his third double-double with 25 points and ten rebounds.
  • Tyreece Brice was the other lone Lion in double figures as he chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
  • On the year, Saint Leo is led by Marcus Dewberry who averages 19.6 points per game (ppg). Satchell and Brice are the other two to average double-digits as Satchell is second with 16.2 ppg and Brice is third at 11.9 ppg.
  • The Lions average 78.7 ppg and hold opponents to 78.3 ppg.
  • Florida Tech enters after an 86-71 setback to Florida Southern on Feb. 8 in Melbourne. In the loss, the Panthers were led by Patrick Anderson who scored 19 points. Sam Daniel tallied 15 points and hauled in eight boards while Derek Murphy was third on the team with 12 points, seven rebounds.
  • On the year, the Panters are led by Jordan Majors who averages 20.9 ppg. Daniel is second with a 19.9 ppg average while Anderson is third at 14.8 ppg. Daniel leads the team in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per game.
  • The Panthers average 86.6 ppg and allow opponents to score 86.8 ppg.

Men's Golf Notes

  • Saint Leo kicks off the spring season ranked No. 20 – GolfStat Relative Ranking - // No. 12 – GCAA Coaches’ Poll - and will head to the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla. on Feb. 13-14 The Lions return to the course after three tournaments in the fall.
  • In their last outing, Saint Leo finished third out of five teams at the UIS Island Getaway in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Ryan Gendron led the squad with an eighth-place finish at 151 (+7). C.J. Tyler was tied for 12th, 158 (+14), where Casey Bannon and Colin Warren tied for 18th at 161 (+17). Nilo Sanchez finished in 21st with a 163 (+19) final total.
