Women's Basketball Notes

  • The Saint Leo women’s basketball team heads to the Courtyard Holiday Classic at Lynn University this weekend where they will take on Benedict and Miles both out of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They will play Benedict on Saturday and Miles on Sunday on Lynn’s campus. Both games will be at 12 p.m.
  • Last season at the Courtyard Holiday Classic, Saint Leo went 0-2, falling to then-No. 24 Benedict, 74-49, and to Shaw, 64-54.
  • This season, the Lions are currently 3-5 overall, with wins over Shorter, Florida Memorial, and Ave Maria.
  • Chelsy Springs leads the Lions in scoring at 13.8 and rebounding at 8.1 boards per game. Freshman Gina Brierley follows at 9.6 points per game, adding 4.5 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists.
  • Saint Leo averages 66.3 points per game on the season on 39.8-percent shooting. Opponents average 71.4 points against the Lions while shooting 42.4-percent.
  • In the conference rankings, Springs is sixth in points per game and fourth in rebounds per game. Freshman Madelin Lang is third in assists per game at 3.9.
  • Benedict is currently 6-5 on the season, and most recently are coming off a 108-92 win over North Greenville University. Four different players are averaging double-digit points. Mikeisha Moore leads with 17.3 points per game, while Destiny Betts adds 13.4. Ta’Keria Leqette adds 12.8, and Shirvel Luke adds 11.4. Moore leads the nation in three-point field goals attempted and three-point field goals made.
  • Miles is 4-4 on the year. They will play SSC member Lynn first in the tournament. Larian Scott is the lone Lady Bear in double figures so far this season, averaging 10.33 points per game. Miles is No. 20 in the nation in three-point field goal defense as the hold their opponents to just 24.7-percent shooting from beyond the arc. 

Men's Basketball Notes

  • SAINT LEO heads into the weekend with a 5-5 record after a 72-65 victory at Clayton State on Dec. 13. The Lions were led by Marcus Dewberry who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Behind Dewberry, there were three others in double-figures with Tyreece Brice at 15, Justin Satchell at 12 and Junior Searcy with 14 off the bench in his collegiate debut.
  • After 10 games, five players average double-figures with Marcus Dewberry at 19.6 points per game, Justin Satchell with 15.8 ppg, Junior Searcy at 14.0 ppg, Tyreece Brice at 13.2 ppg and Necdet  Gurkan at 10.2 ppg.
  • Satchell leads the team in rebounds per game with 7.0, while Dewberry is at 5.2 rpg and Gurkan at 4.8 rpg. Dewberry averages 4.8 assists per game with team-leading 1.4 steals per game.
  • On the year, the Lions average 84.9 points per game while their defense holds opponents to 83.1.
  • AUBURN-MONTGOMERY enters the game at 2-9 on the year after picking up their second win on Dec. 12 at Albany State, 69-68. In the Warhawks win, Desmond DeRamus hit the go-ahead buck with eight seconds remaining, as he finished with 18 points on the night. Julius McCoy, Darrion Taylor and Marcus Jackson all scored in double-figures as McCoy had 11 points, while Taylor and Jackson were both at 10 apiece.
  • On the year, DeRamus leads the team in points per game with 13.6 where Taylor is second at 10.2. Romoane Eager is just outside the 10 point average with 9.2 ppg. DeRamus cleans up the glass as he averages 7.4 per game just ahead of Jarett Croff who stands at 7.3 rpg. DeRamus dishes out 4.5 assists per game.
  • As a team, Auburn-Montgomery averages 64.6 points a game while opponents are averaging 69.9 against them.
  • BENEDICT enters the contest on Monday, Dec. 19 after a two day tournament at Kentucky Wesleyan on Dec. 16 and 17. The Tigers are 2-3 heading into the weekend before playing three games in four games. In their last outing on Dec. 3, the Tigers defeated Kentucky State 68-65 at home.
  • In the win over Kentucky Wesleyan, Benedict saw Brandon Morris go off for 27 points to lead all scorers on the night. Christopher Spencer added 13 points off the bench to round out the double-digit scorers for the Tigers.
  • On the year, Morris leads the team and is the lone Tiger to average in double-figures with 16.0 ppg. Spencer is just behind Morris with 8.8 ppg but hauls in team leading 7.8 rebounds per game.
  • As a team, the Tigers are averaging 64.4 points per game while allowing opponents to score 68 points per game.
