Miller-Mangen Elevated to Academic Advisor for Athletics

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In addition to her current coaching responsibilities, Saint Leo University head cross country coach Melissa Miller-Mangen has been elevated to Academic Advisor for Athletics, it was announced recently by Director of Athletics Francis X. Reidy.

"We are excited we were able to enhance our cross country program while at the same time enhancing the academic oversight of our 17 athletic programs and 350 athletes,” said Reidy. “Melissa has steadily improved the cross country programs in a part-time role so this will only help add more continuity to the teams. At the same time she has a skill set in academic advising which will benefit our coaches and student athletes, adding value in this other area of focus."

Helming the cross country squad for the past three seasons, Miller-Mangen has assembled an impressive resume both on the course and in the classroom. Academically, both her men’s and women’s teams earned seven spots on the USTFCCCA All-Academic squad in 2011, while each individual lineup earned All-Academic Team awards.

"I am absolutely thrilled with Melissa," said Associate Athletics Director Vicki Fredrickson. "She has jumped right into the position with both feet and taken off running just like a good cross country coach should."

As the academic advisor for athletics, Miller-Mangen will be in charge of retention alert concerns, registration assistance, supporting the Faculty Academic Advisor, overseeing transfer-student transcripts, and identifying low grade-point-average or at-risk students.

In addition, she will monitor all student-athlete's on academic probation, as well as monitoring midterm and final grade checks, and the tracking of academic accolades, including the prestigious President's Club.

Miller-Mangen will begin her additional duties immediately.
