The 2020-21 season will mark Paul Mangen’s 12th season at the helm of the Saint Leo men’s and women’s swimming programs, and his 14th overall as a collegiate head coach. During his previous 11 seasons at Saint Leo, the Hall of Fame inductee and former All-American has cultivated an athletic and academic powerhouse, with each program’s benchmark for success rising every season.

2019-20
Men- Saint Leo men's swimming sent two representatives to the 2020 NCAA National Championships. Sophomore Matthew Daniel took 16th in the 1,000 freestyle on the opening day before the meet was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Junior Kosta Mitrovic was unable to compete in the 200 breaststroke.
Women- Saint Leo women's swimming sent Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello as the lone representative to the 2020 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships. The Lions broke three program records including Bonsanti Feniello taking down both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle marks. She also teamed up to help break the 800 freestyle relay record.
2018-19
Men- Saint Leo men's swimming finished 25th overall at the 2019 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, after Henrik Dahrendorff became the program’s first Individual National Champion as he won the 200 breaststroke. The Lions posted a 5-2 dual record during the season and had three swimmers qualify for the NCAA Championship.
Women- Saint Leo women's swimming sent Paulina Majszutowicz as the lone representative to the 2019 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships. The Lions were 7-2 in dual action during the regular season including a home victory over nationally-ranked Florida Southern.
2017-18
Men- Saint Leo men's swimming finished 10th overall at the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, with 27 All-American selections from eight different swimmers. Went 5-1 in dual meets during the regular season. Henrik Dahrendorff was the National Runner-Up in the 100 breaststroke while setting a new program record in the event.
Women- Saint Leo women's swimming finished 22nd at the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, with 10 All-American selections from four different swimmers. The Lions posted a 6-2 record in dual meets during the season.
2016-17
Men- Saint Leo men's swimming finished 30th overall at the 2017 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, with two All-Americans.
Women- Saint Leo women's swimming finished 20th at the 2017 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships. The Lions posted an 8-0 record in dual meets during the season including a perfect 7-0 against SSC foes. Collected 15 All-American honors from five different swimmers. Produced the SSC Freshman of the Year, Annie Lindstrom.
2015-16
Men- Saint Leo men's swimming finished eighth overall at the 2016 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, with five All-Americans. The team also had two CoSIDA First Team Academic All-Americans.
Women- Saint Leo women's swimming finished 33rd at the 2016 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships. The Lions posted a 7-0 record in dual meets against their Sunshine State Conference rivals. The team also recorded the fourth-highest GPA among Division II women's swimming programs.
2014-15
Men- Finished with a 6-0 record in head to head competition. Six swimmers qualified for NCAA Nationals producing six top-8 finishes and six top-16 finishes. Academically, the team earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors with the top GPA in the SSC and 2nd best GPA in Div. II. Five individual CSCAA Scholar All-America honors.
Women- Posted a 7-0-1 record in head to head competition. Two qualified for NCAA Nationals garnering two top-8 finishes and two top-16 finishes. Academically, the team earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors and six individual CSCAA Scholar All-America or All-America Honorable Mentions.
2013-14
Men- Finished 17th overall in NCAA National Championships. Set six Sunshine State Conference records. Piled up four SSC Swimmer of the Week Awards, two national swimmer of the week awards, one Sunshine State Conference Champion, four NCAA All-Americans, two Academic All-Americans, and the programs first-ever SSC Male Swimmer of the Year.
Women- Two swimmers qualified for NCAA National Championships, where they finished 26th. Saw ten program records fall and two Sunshine State Conference Records. Two swimmers were named Sunshine State Conference Champions and NCAA All-Americans. Had program’s first-ever Sunshine State Conference Female Freshman of the Year. Academically finished 4th nationally in team grade point average, with two Academic All-Americans and four swimmers with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
2012-13
Men- Five Lions led the program to a 13th place finish at the NCAA National Championships earning six Top-8 swims and 18 top-16 finishes. Had SSC Swimmer of the Meet and SSC Swimmer of the Year. Earned CSCAA All-Academic Team honors.
Women- Earned CSCAA All-Academic Team honors.
2011-12
Mangen's group finished with an overall and conference record of 9-5, including the team's highest national ranking to date, 21st. It marked the first time in program history that both the men's and women's teams finished with an above .500 record in conference. There were 16 broken records during the season and one men’s Nationals competitor for the 50 and 100 Free and 100 Fly.
2010-11
Finished with overall record of 8-7-1 including 5-6-1 in the SSC. Both programs finished the season ranked 23rd nationally and had six individuals qualify provisionally for the NCAA National Championships, two conference individual champions, (both set conference records), 26 new team records were set and four student-athletes earned Academic All-America honors.
As a Swimmer…
Mangen was a 14-time Bluegrass Mountain Conference champion and was named the 2003 swimmer of the year.
He was selected by the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association as the 2003 male scholar-athlete of the year. He was an eight time, NCAA All-America selection and also earned Academic All-America honors twice during his undergraduate career.
Graduating in 2003 from Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV, the Celina, OH native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management, Cum Laude, and also holds a Master's of Business Administration.
As a Coach…
Mangen began his head swim coaching career at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.V. where his athletes captured one national championship, five NCAA All-America honors, set 13 school records and two conference records (WVIAC/ BGMC). In addition, his teams won 22 conference individual championships and three conference team titles (WVIAC/ BGMC).
After three years at Wesleyan, Mangen moved from Division II to Division I as the No. 1 assistant coach of Wright State (OH). He also served as swimming and diving recruiting coordinator for both programs. While at WSU, the program regained the Horizon League conference championship two of three years and added a second place finish. The athletic accomplishments while at WSU included three NCAA Division I qualifying swims, five Horizon League records, 13 school records, 29 individual conference championship swims, and four relay conference titles.
In addition to his head coaching duties, Mangen is also the Director of Aquatics and is responsible for all aspects of the Saint Leo Aquatic Center and related programs.
Coach Mangen resides in San Antonio, Fla., with his wife Melissa, their son, Jack, and daughter Reese.
