Dominique Daniels and Josue Vazquez

SAINT LEO, Fla. – After some impressive weekend wins, women’s basketball forward Dominique Daniels and men’s basketball guard Josue Vazquez have been named the Saint Leo Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 31st.

On the women’s side, Daniels had a stellar week for the Lions as she posted a double-double in two Sunshine State Conference contests while seeing 79 minutes of action.

Against Barry, the senior connected on 7-of-9 shots from the field and scored a game-high 19 points. She collected a team-high seven boards and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

Later in the week, the Columbus, Ohio native led Saint Leo to an 11-point, double-overtime win over Nova Southeastern. Against the Sharks, Daniels went off for her second 19-point effort of the week and matched a season-high with 15 rebounds. The senior went 7-for-13 from the field and connected on 5-of-7 free throws in 44 minutes of play.

In total, Daniels averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds-per-game. She went 14-for-22 from the field and hit 10-of-12 shots from the charity stripe.

In earning his second-consecutive SLU Athlete of the Week bid, senior Josue Vazquez had a stellar week leading the Lions to a 1-1 record as he recorded 69 minutes of court time.

In the Lions’ loss to Barry last Wednesday, the native of Miami hit true on 5-of-7 shots from the floor as he bucketed 13 points, hitting one of the two 3-pointers he attempted and even swiping four Buccaneer possessions in 34 minutes.

Rebounding from the loss with an impressive win over Nova Southeastern on Saturday, Vazquez scored a career-high 25 points as he hit 6-of-12 shots.  Out of those six attempts, the senior drained an amazing 4-of-5 three-pointers and added 9-of-10 free-throws in the big Sunshine State Conference win.

For the week, Vazquez mirrored Daniels as he averaged 19 points, five rebounds and three steals.  He hit 11-of-19 shots from the field and 5-of-7 treys.  He was also accurate on 11-of-13 free-throws.
